Idris Elba admits his new film ‘Beast’ was inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio

Idris Elba, best known for his roles in films such as “Thor: Ragnarok”, “Beasts of No Nation”, and “The Suicide Squad”, will next appear in “Beast”, an African adventure set by Universal Pictures. The film is directed by Baltasar Kormakur.

“Beast” tells the story of a father who must try his best to protect his two daughters from a giant lion that kills everyone who gets in his way. The trailer for the film has teased that “Beast” is far from the usual survival thriller, with the monstrous lion going to kill not for food but apparently for sport. But apparently, the film was inspired by famous Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

In a new interview with USA Today, Elba explains that it was actually a certain scene from 2015’s “The Revenant” with DiCaprio that formed the basis for the lion attack scene in “Beast”. The actor explained that the bear attack scene in the film, which features DiCaprio’s character being brutally mauled by a CGI bear, is the benchmark for the lion fighting scene in “Beast”.

Elba explained that, because the lion in “Beast” was completely CGI, he worked with the stuntman in a motion capture suit to capture the intense fight. The reason for using CGI, of course, is because there is no lion that can be used for movie scenes.

“Real lion fighting is very difficult. No lions were used in the making of this film,” said Elba. “The bear scene that Leonardo did is really realistic and kind of a benchmark in terms of what we want to achieve for the audience. Because everyone who watched it was horrified.”

Besides Elba, “Beast” also stars “District 9” star Sharlto Copley, as well as Iyana Halley and Leah Sava. Beast is set in an isolated South African setting and hints that the film won’t be mediocre, with plenty of fright and at least some bloody brawls between Elba and the titular beast.
