Here’s a synopsis of 12 Strong starring Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon. The film centers on the character of Captain Mitch Nelson, played by Chris Hemsworth. He is a Captain in the US Army Unit, who is taking time off to spend time with his children and wife at home.
Due to this terrible incident, Mitch had to go back to the field and postpone his leave schedule. He volunteered to go to Afghanistan in order to dismantle the roots of terrorist activities that were allegedly carried out there.
Unit 595 requires special instructions and evaluation in carrying out this dangerous task. They stop briefly in Uzbekistan to get directions from Colonel Mulholland (William Fichtner).
After receiving an intense briefing, Mitch and the ODA 595 team immediately moved secretly using the MH-47 Chinook toward Afghanistan.
In accordance with Mulholland’s mandate, ODA 595 was assigned to join the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan led by Abdul Rashid Dostum (Navid Negahban).
After meeting with Dostum at Mazar-i Sharif, six of the 12 members of 595, including Captain Mitch Nelson, leave with Dostum to the mountains. Meanwhile, the other six remain in the camp nicknamed “The Alamo” under the command of veteran Hal Spencer (Michael Shannon).
Although initially skeptical about joining 595, Dostum finally understands after seeing Mitch Nelson’s ability in battle. In one battle, Dostum made a tactical error that resulted in several casualties.
This infuriated Mitch and eventually clashed with Dostum. However, the two managed to reach peace.
In the midst of that, Dostum leaves Nelson and ODA 595. Mitch remains determined to continue the mission against the Taliban along with members of the ODA 595 team and some of the Afghan fighters who fought alongside them.
This film is based on the non-fiction book by Doug Stanton entitled Horse Soldiers.
The film cost US$35 million to produce. 12 Strong went on to earn US$71.1 million at the box office.
