Synopsis of The Hitman’s Bodyguard Starring Ryan Reynolds

The story of The Hitman’s Bodyguard focuses on the character of Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) who is a personal bodyguard. He lives a luxurious and comfortable life in England when he is in charge of escorting his client Takashi Kurosawa (Tsuwayuki Saotome), an international arms dealer. However, his luxurious life was suddenly snatched away after the client was killed before his own eyes. Kurosawa’s death makes Michael erased from the A+ class guard list.

Two years later, Michael’s slump slowly disappeared after getting a job as a bodyguard for drug addict executives in London. Separately, the International Criminal Court is trying the figure of the Belarusian dictator Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman). However, he was so difficult to be tried because the evidence and witnesses were not strong enough.

Hope to bring this dictator to justice falls on a hitman named Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) who is currently in prison. Darius is willing to testify to Dukhovich’s crimes, on the condition that his wife Sonia (Salma Hayek) is released from custody. Once approved, Darius immediately headed to The Hague to testify. He departs from England for The Hague with a convoy under heavy escort led by Interpol agent Amelia Roussel (Elodie Yung).

Via a road trip, the escort convoy was suddenly ambushed by Dukhovich’s men while traveling through Coventry territory. The ambush was based on information from treasonous Interpol members. Due to the attack, part of the escort team is killed, leaving only Darius and Agent Roussel. Realizing the dangerous situation, Agent Roussel immediately asks for the help of Michael, who is his ex-girlfriend.

Roussel’s agent asks Michael to escort and protect Darius until he arrives at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The two of them board a ship bound for Amsterdam, where Sonia is being held. But on the way, Darius actually reveals a secret that makes Michael furious.

The secret makes Michael and Darius’ relationship complicated. But on the one hand, they must complete the journey to The Hague. The Hitman’s Bodyguard is an action comedy film directed by Patrick Hughes. He is also known as the director of The Expendables 3 (2014) to Red Hill (2010).

In addition to the duo Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, this film also stars Hollywood’s top actors. Some of them, Salma Hayek, Gary Oldman, Elodie Yung, and Joaquim de Almeida.

This film premiered on August 18, 2017 and managed to reach revenues of up to US $ 176.6 million or around Rp. 2.57 billion (US $ 1 = Rp. 14,564). This figure far exceeds the film production budget which touched the range of US $ 69 million or equivalent to Rp. 1 billion.
